Founder of Grants for Good to Present at United Way's 33rd Annual Conference
Join us at United Way of Central Eastern California’s 33rd Annual Professional Development Conference for a presentation by the founder of Grants for Good on "How Data Funds Good Programs."
Bakersfield, CA – May 21, 2024 – Grants for Good, LLC is proud to announce that its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Kerr, will be a featured workshop speaker at United Way of Central Eastern California’s 33rd Annual Professional Development Conference. The event will take place on June 26th at the Bakersfield Marriott.
Lisa Kerr will present on "Enhancing Public Health: Data-Driven Strategies for Grant Writing and Advocacy." In this workshop, Kerr will share her extensive expertise in funding strategy and nonprofit advising to help attendees leverage data for effective grant writing and advocacy, ultimately enhancing public health initiatives.
“Data is typically reserved for conversations in tech, but it should be present in everyday conversations related to advocacy and grant writing,” says Lisa Kerr. “I worked on data collection and analysis for one of the largest drug studies in a fortune 500 global biotech company and the amount of data we consumed was enormous–but that’s where the money was. Nonprofits, especially small to mid-sized orgs need to understand how to collect, verify, and analyze data. Their funding depends on it.”
Kerr will share strategies she learned in data collection and analysis from her work on drug studies and will do a deep dive into the parallels of “big data”' and nonprofit data. Kerr hopes that community leaders and advocates will walk away with a sense of what constitutes important data, how to ethically collect data, and how small to mid-sized nonprofits can level the playing field against large nonprofit organizations that collect their data.
The presentation is part of a larger push by Grants for Good to make philanthropic and public funding knowledge universally accessible.

Unlocking Creativity: Exploring Grant and Fellowship Opportunities for Artists and Authors
Creativity knows no bounds, but for artists and authors, nurturing their craft often requires financial support.
Creativity knows no bounds, but for artists and authors, nurturing their craft often requires financial support. Luckily, there are grant and fellowship opportunities available to help turn artistic visions into reality.
Whether you’re a painter, writer, sculptor, or poet, this guide will assist you in unlocking the doors to funding opportunities and providing the necessary resources to propel your artistic journey.
The Value of Grants and Fellowships
Artists and authors face unique challenges in their creative endeavors. Many struggle to balance their artistic pursuits with financial stability. This is where grants and fellowships come into play, providing crucial financial backing that allows artists to focus on their work and further develop their talent. Grants and fellowships not only offer financial support but also serve as a stamp of validation for artists and authors. They are a testament to their talent and potential, helping to boost their professional reputation and open doors to future opportunities. Furthermore, these opportunities often provide access to invaluable resources, such as studio spaces, mentorship programs, and networking events, enabling artists and authors to grow and connect with like-minded individuals in their respective fields.
Types of Grants and Fellowships
There are a wide range of grants and fellowships available for artists and authors, each catering to different disciplines, genres, and career stages. Some of the most common types include:
a. Project Grants: These grants support specific artistic projects, providing funding for materials, research, and production costs. They typically require a detailed project proposal, budget, and artistic portfolio.
b. Residency Fellowships: Residencies offer artists and authors the opportunity to work in a dedicated space for a set period. These programs often provide accommodations, stipends, and access to facilities, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in their creative practice.
c. Research Grants: Aimed at authors and scholars, research grants fund in-depth investigations into specific topics, supporting the creation of books, articles, and academic papers.
d. Career Development Fellowships: Designed to help artists and authors advance their careers, these fellowships provide financial support for professional development activities, such as attending workshops, conferences, and training programs.
e. Diversity and Inclusion Grants: Many organizations recognize the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion in the arts. These grants aim to support underrepresented artists and authors, offering funding and resources to help amplify their voices.
The Application Process
While the idea of applying for grants and fellowships may seem daunting, breaking down the process into manageable steps can greatly enhance your chances of success.
a. Research: Begin by researching grant and fellowship opportunities that align with your artistic discipline and career goals. Explore reputable websites, art organizations, and cultural institutions that offer grants and fellowships in your field.
b. Read Guidelines: Carefully review the guidelines and eligibility criteria for each opportunity. Pay attention to deadlines, required documentation, and any specific instructions for the application process.
c. Prepare Your Portfolio: Build a strong portfolio that showcases your best work. Include samples of your art, writing samples, past exhibitions, publications, awards, and any other relevant achievements. Tailor your portfolio to highlight your strengths and align with the specific requirements of each grant or fellowship.
d. Craft a Compelling Proposal: Write a well-crafted project proposal that clearly outlines your artistic vision, objectives, and how the grant or fellowship will facilitate your creative journey. Be concise, persuasive, and demonstrate your unique perspective and contribution to your artistic field.
e. Budgeting: For project-based grants, create a comprehensive and complete budget. Include estimates when requested.
